Copyright Champion award-winner announced
THE CILIP Copyright Champion Award 2023 has been awarded to Benjamin White, Researcher at the Centre for Intellectual Property and Management, Bournemouth Uni- versity.
Nominated for his leadership and advoc acy around better copyright and IP solutions and regulation in the sector, he said: “It is a real honour and delight to receive this award personally, but also its existence is significant as it high- lights the importance for the sector the skills we need to have around copyright and by extension licensing. So much of what libraries and library patrons can do with their collections is shaped by copy- right and now with digital collections, by licensing. From a sector perspective, as a former publisher it still amazes me how much the publishing industry and its trade bodies invest in government affairs around these and other library issues – something which our sector doesn’t do and explains why we are on the back foot so often on important issues like Open Access, ebooks, inflexi- ble copyright laws etc.”
The award is sponsored by Naomi Korn Associates and is a prestigious annual hon- our that recognises the achievements of a copyright champion in the sector. Formerly Head of Intellectual Property at the British Library, Benjamin also has a background in publishing.
He is now active in the intellectual prop-
erty field in Europe, having sat on a number of EU IP working groups and is currently an advisor to the IPO as a member of the Research Excellence Advisory Group. Benjamin is co-founder of Knowledge Rights 21 (see p.12), an Arcadia funded project to promote copyright reform and open access in Europe for the benefit of research and education. Benjamin said: “Funded by the Arcadia Foundation, I established Knowledge Rights 21 to urge people to take a look online, on Twitter etc, at what we are doing around legislative change in the research space. For example, in addition to policy work in the UK and Brussels we have some interesting new studies coming out soon on issues as diverse as eBooks, open and flexible copy- right norms, rights retention and secondary publishing rights. It’s all go!’
