INSIGHT LGBTQ+

Network AGM 2023 T

HE CILIP LGBTQ+ Network held its third AGM in February. It gave the Committee a chance to share our

work over the previous year, celebrate the successes, share plans for the upcoming year and open the fl oor to Network members. Summary as follows. Over the past year we’ve had a number of Committee members leave and others join. You can fi nd out more about the current Committee members here: https://bit.ly/3MYYZY9. We’re always on the lookout for new Committee members too, to take responsibility for specifi c areas of our work. At present these include Deputy Events Organiser; and Digital Champion (social media and website). In terms of work, we’ve been involved in since the formation of the CILIP LGBTQ+ Network, this has included:

● supporting the UK Web Archive LGBTQ+ Lives Online project (ongoing);

● consultation on new CILIP Membership model (Sep-Oct 2020);

● #uklibchat on Discrimination and Issues faced by LGBTQ+ people in the workplace (Nov 2021);

● CILIP Webinar: “How to be an ally to trans, non-binary, and gender non- conforming people.” (Nov 2021);

Committee plans for the coming year include running our third Festival of Pride and Knowledge after last year’s successful events. The festival will be run over the summer and will once again be online. We are in the planning stages for this and will announce the events via our usual channels – the Network site (www.cilip.org.uk/lgbtq), social media, and our e-newsletter. So please keep an eye out for them! We’ve also released our Network Annual Member survey: https://forms. gle/p369piWAg9b9L6Vv8 Please complete the survey so we can take your views into account when we plan for the year ahead. Following on from the formal part of the AGM, we opened the fl oor to the Network. Key points from the discussion included:

● Knowledge Management & EDI – How to ensure EDI is kept as a high priority when embarking on Knowledge Management projects? How can we get to the stage where LGBTQ+ issues become a consideration for everything we do and are raised in every situation, and they thus become business as usual, and are not considered as an EDI afterthought? It was felt that there should be experts working on EDI regardless of whether it is to address protected characteristics or not – every policy that concerns staff or customers aff ected should have EDI considerations as a baseline;

● a question was raised about whether the work of CILIP was representative of its membership – i.e. engaging more with members from diverse equality strands. Is this happening successfully? The results of the 2022 workforce mapping project are being analysed and it will be interesting to see the results from that project. CILIP LGBTQ+ Network Committee has promised to look into the Network’s demographics and share those as soon as possible;

● we are always on the lookout for anyone willing to write articles for

Information Professional. If you have an idea for one and would like to volunteer, please contact us via our email address at the end of this article. We are especially keen to hear from anyone who has ideas about articles that crossover with the work of the other Diversity Networks;

● the work of CILIP looking at current guidance on controversial stock was discussed. AGM attendees agreed that there’s a worrying increase of transphobia across sectors, and centralised guidance and support would be appreciated, with input from the LKI LGBTQ+ community.

Following on from the AGM we were joined by guest speaker Sab Samuel from Drag Queen Story Hour UK, who talked engagingly and passionately about his story time events under the persona of drag queen Aida H. Dee, and his plans for the future. If you’re an LGBTQIA+ person and want to join the CILIP LGBTQ+ Network you can do so via: www.cilip.org. uk/lgbtq
