s we were putting together this issue of Information Pro- fessional, one word kept coming back to me – “Opportunity”. With CILIP Conference now just a few weeks away, we have been talking to some of this year’s speakers about what to expect, and it is no coincidence that both of our Conference interviews touch on Artificial Intelligence. This year’s Conference has a theme of leadership and is all about those “top-of mind” issues that are impacting on the profession. And there is no doubt that the release of Open AI’s ChatGPT and similar Generative AI has pushed this issue further up the agenda.
A
It’s fantastic to see that the Conference programme will be looking at the impact of AI and helping the Information Profession to find its feet and plot a path forward. That path is full of opportunity, and as a profession we need to be leading the way. CILIP has already made its first moves in identifying these oppor- tunities with the publication of its Research report: The impact of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics on the information profession written by Dr Andrew Cox. If you haven’t already seen it, then I’d urge you to take a look. It is full of powerful insights into AI and its potential (you can find the report here
www.cilip.org.uk/ researchreport).
Elsewhere in this issue Lesley English explains how Lancaster University Library has been building connections in its commu- nity. The library has been looking at Lancaster’s historic links to slavery and working with local groups to reconcile the city’s past to its present. It is a clear example of the benefits that can come from spotting an opportunity and acting on it. This issue also marks the first to be published from CILIP’s new home in the British Library, and that moves feels like a huge opportunity for CILIP. It puts us right in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter and all the potential that brings. The physical move also feels like a big step forward for CILIP as it continues to implement the goals set out in the five-year strategy and Action Plan, We are CILIP.
Conference is one of my highlights in the CILIP calendar and there is already a real buzz about this year’s event, with great speakers and sessions lined up at a fantastic venue. With less than two months to go, now is the perfect time to book your place and connect with leaders, emerging leaders and aspiring leaders from across the information professions. It really is an opportunity not to be missed.
