Helena Bonham Carter takes on President’s role at London Library

ACTOR Helena Bonham Carter CBE has been named as the London L ibrary’sfirsteverfemalepresident. She follows Sir Tim Rice in the Honor-

Library members confirmed the appointment at the Lon- don Library’s Annual General Meeting in November, with trustees proposing her for President for “her creativity and connections with literature and stories, her high profile and potential to advo- cate among new audiences”. The library has been running since

1841, and has attracted members from the fields of science and arts including writers such as Virginia Woolf, Angela Carter, and Daphne du Maurier. Helena said: “I am delighted to become

The London Library’s first female Pres- ident and to champion an institution that is open to all. The library is truly a place like no other, inspiring and sup- porting writers for over 180 years, many of whom have in some way informed my own career and those of actors every- where. Join the conversation at CILIP’s Green Libraries Conference

CILIP will be hosting a free Green Libraries Conference in spring, bringing expert insight and practical advice together. As part of CILIP’s Green Libraries Partnership, the conference is an opportunity for delegates to share ideas, learn from others and find out about the lat- est developments around sustainability in libraries. There will also be the chance to take a closer look at some projects that are already in place. The Arts Council England event is free and open to all public libraries in England, and it will feature keynotes, PechaKucha style presentations, panel discussions and plenty of opportunities to build new connections. The one-day conferenc e takes place at the Wellcome Trust, London, on 24 March. To find out more and to register visit www.cilip.org.uk/GreenLibrariesEvents.
