IN DEPTH

We Are CILIP – one year on

On publication, We Are CILIP, the new five-year strategy and action plan from CILIP received widespread plaudits from across the library and information sector – prompting one long-stand- ing member to write, “This is brilliant! Makes me proud to be a member.” But one year into the five-year lifespan of We Are CILIP, CILIP CEO Nick Poole asks “how well is our strategy holding up – particularly in the context of both global and domestic challenges?”

At the core of We Are CILIP is a very simple idea – that we are living in a world of tremendous change and that our best response to those changes is to support our members in mak- ing the transition from ‘information managers to information leaders’. We want to help our members not just to survive, but to look ahead with confidence and build a successful career by taking ownership of and driving change in your organisation or community.

association We Are CILIP opens with a declaration – that “we are here for everyone who has a professional connection to libraries, infor- mation, knowledge and data and shares our belief in their power to change lives.” That ‘for everyone’ is important. We Are CILIP marks the conclusion of a transition from the ‘old CILIP’ as a particular kind of club for Chartered professionals and towards a more modern, inclusive body that seeks to represent everyone working in libraries, information and knowledge. Not that we don’t value professional registration as much as we ever did – it remains core to our essence and purpose as

The key step in this direction is the launch

of CILIP Pathways, our wholly-owned trad- ing arm providing assessment services with a particular focus on the Level 3 Library, Archive and Information Services Appren- ticeship (www.cilip.org.uk/CILIPPathways). Since launch CILIP Pathways has seen more than 60 apprentices enrol, bringing a fantastic new energy and optimism to their
