‘‘ O
We are keen to keep growing and I really would like your views whether you are an RPG member or not on anything to do with our group.
UR underlying theme for 2022 has been to vigorously promote the role of RPG so we are able to offer
more to existing members, help attract new members and ensure that RPG thrives and grows as a special interest group.
We felt the best way to promote RPG was to deliver a range of news and activities both electronic, hard copy and face to face. The RPG Committee agreed an enhanced range of activities, divided up the work and got on with it! Post Lib is the journal of RPG – see latest issue and archive at: http://tinyurl. com/postlib2022
After Covid we agreed to rely on the online version of Post Lib. Unfortunately, only two thirds of RPG members can be reached by email so one third were not receiving the benefits of membership including news of events. We agreed to send out a hard copy of one edition of Post Lib each year to those members with no email address on the CILIP mailing list. The Annual Dinner held at the Civil Service Club is a highlight of the year and we managed to restart it last April post Covid.
Our bravest decision during 2022 was to hold a Weekend School. This was held in Ambleside in October with visits including Wordsworth haunts and Beatrix Potter’s farm. With a good selection of guest speakers, the weekend was a real success enjoyed by all and even made an operating surplus.
One of the strengths of RPG has been events and visits to other organisations. During 2022, as Covid eased visits included the Moravian Church Library, National Badminton Museum and the Royal Philatelic Society London. After research, RPG agreed to purchase an OWL 360-degree camera to enhance the online experience for both talks and

virtual visits, and will enable far greater promotion of visits.
We did not do everything planned for 2022. RPG had approached members about starting a 100 Club and there was enough support to do this – but not the admin capacity from very hard- working committee members so this will have to wait until 2023. But what about other plans for 2023? The annual lunch is on Tuesday 25 April 2023 in the Civil Service Club in London and our Weekend School will be held at Gladstone’s Library in North Wales, from Friday 6 to Monday 9 October 2023 (
www.gladstoneslibrary.org). Our OWL camera will be fully utilised during the remainder of this year and into 2023, including for our session on Longevity and the Library, Information and Knowledge Sector, bringing together those in the room at the Royal London Philatelic Society with other participants on Zoom. We have lots of visits planned and you can see full details on the CILIP website at
www.cilip.org.uk/events.
RPG took an exhibition stand at the CILIP Conference in Liverpool last July and attracted a good deal of interest from CILIP staff, members, groups and exhibitors. We reopened the debate about the purpose and identity of the group. It is true that many RPG members are not working full time for a single employer, but most are busy with new portfolio careers, consultancy work, career breaks and volunteering. The debate continues. Many colleagues suggested that we needed a catchy new strap line that did not include the word “retired” to reflect the energy and drive of our new broader vision. We are keen to keep growing and I really would like your views whether you are an RPG member or not on anything to do with our group.
