I was delighted to bring our message to this year’s IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Dublin.

A green revolution We Are CILIP sets out four ‘strategic contexts’ which will guide and shape our work on behalf of the library, information and knowledge management profession over the next five years. These are: Environmental Responsibility, Dig- ital Transformation, Equity and Social Justice and Leadership. Since publication, our work on Environmental Responsibility has blos- somed thanks to new investment from the Arts Council England, which has allowed us to set up the Green Libraries Partnership (www.cilip.org.uk/GreenLibraries). The Partnership is a joint initiative led by CILIP with Libraries Connected, the British Library, the Arts Council England and sustainability experts Julie’s Bicycle. We aim to demon- strate how librarians and information professionals can make a powerful contribution to the sustainability goals of their community or organisation, building on their strengths in evidence, engagement and education. To date, dozens of libraries and infor- mation services across all sectors have signed up to the Green Libraries Mani- festo and we have been proud to launch the first ever UK Green Libraries Grant Fund, awarding six library services seed funding to implement green initiatives. Over the next few years, we want to build this partnership into a movement, grow the grant fund and raise aware- ness among policymakers, funders and employers of the contribution their librarian and information professionals can make.

Digital Transformation CILIP believes that we are living and

working in the early days of a society and an economy that are being transformed by technology and data. We Are CILIP sets out our ambition to support our members in leading and driving digital change, rather than responding to or having to deal with decisions made on their behalf by IT specialists.

Our first step has been to commission a suite of online Digital Leadership for Libraries training modules, available free of charge to library workers at all levels who want to build their Digital confidence. These modules move on from the tradi- tional ‘how to’ guides to specific tech- nologies and instead focus on how you can lead digital change, harness digital creativity and use technologies to develop and improve knowledge and information services.

CILIP is working closely with the team

leading ‘LibraryOn’ (formerly the Single Digital Presence) at the British Library to support their ambition to grow the online audience for libraries. Over the coming years, building on the digital commit- ments of We Are CILIP, we will be embed- ding digital skills across every aspect of our work.

A look to the future

I hope this has given you some sense of the transformative impact that We Are CILIP is already having on CILIP’s work, just one year on from publication. It has provided a galvanising force and momentum, meaning that we can focus with renewed energy on the activities which help our members to succeed in your chosen profession.

There is more to come. In 2023, we

c elebrate 125 years since the granting of assent to CILIP’s Royal Charter – a landmark moment and an opportunity to celebrate 125 years of British Librarianship. We will be implementing a new Community Strategy as an output of We Are CILIP, helping us to work in partnership with our extraordinary community of Member Networks, Special Interest Groups and Devolved Nations partners. We are also planning the launch of an exciting new offer, which will transform the accessibility and currency of both face-to-face and online training for librarians and information professionals. Above all, We Are CILIP is a declaration of intent. We want to be the best, most impactful and most useful professional membership association for librarians, information and knowledge management practitioners. We are well on our way, but there is lots more to come, so watch this space! IP
