ooking back at this time of year may well feel like a bit of a cliché, but in a year that has seen so much activity we thought we would embrace it in our final issue of the year. Not only has 2022 seen the launch of We Are CILIP, our new five-year action plan and strategy, it also saw a wel- come return for CILIP Conference as an in-person event. We are CILIP sets the tone for CILIP’s work to support members and our ambitions for the profession. It is underpinned by CILIP’s ethical framework, but also identifies key themes for the future – helping to shape what it means to be an information professional in a world where data and access to information are increasingly impor- tant. CILIP Chief Executive Nick Poole looks more closely at the first year of We are CILIP and the impact it is already having (pp. 15-17). Elsewhere in this issue we look at how CILIP in the devolved nations have been re-connecting with members and creating new opportunities – both within the profession and wider society. Here again, We are CILIP has been running through this activity, high- lighting CILIP’s strength through unity (pp. 24-27). The over-arching activity from CILIP has delivered new opportu- nities through training and professional development, apprentice pathways into the profession, sustainability projects, advocacy and much more besides (pp. 18-21).
And although we are looking back at achievements in 2022, it is worth remembering that all of the activity over the last 12 months is actually about setting a path into the future and looking forward. Training and development helps individuals invest in their own futures, learning new skills and building knowledge that will power services, and empower users. New dedicated training for digital skills has recently launched, and like much of CILIP’s training this is free for members – one of many benefits that come as standard with membership.
Professional Registration is an opportunity for members to demon- strate their skills and knowledge, and many members have chosen to do just that this year – could 2023 be the year you decide to join CILIP’s Professional Register. Another future-focused initiative is the CILIP-led apprenticeship scheme, which is helping more people find new routes into the pro- fession.
CILIP’s Green Library Partnership, also launched this year, is per- haps the biggest commitment to a positive future – not just for the profession, but for everyone.
