Registration. Highlights from this year’s series of webinars include Reflective practices and learning via professional communities of practice and Career Tales – moving between sectors; This is no job for a robot: Archives, AI and digital transformation and Lessons learned from next-generation data: Knowledge graphs and machine learning.

With increases in fuel, housing and food costs CILIP was able to offer practical advice and support to members through a webinar on Managing the cost-of-living increases.

The aim of the webinars, which can be accessed by members at www.cilip.org.uk/ webinars, is to provide accessible, practical information in a simple format. Most of the content will support CILIP’s Profes- sional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB) in some way, so can be an ideal starting point for Professional Registration – no matter what stage in your career you are.

Professional Registration The cornerstone of CILIP membership, Professional Registration is recognised by employers in all sectors and interna- tionally. It allows you to demonstrate your abilities, knowledge and experience, and, in an increasingly competitive world, helps set you apart.

Employers worked with CILIP to develop the latest Professional Knowledge and Skills Base, ensuring that professionally registered members have the right skills and knowledge to deliver modern services. A specialist PKSB aimed at the health sec- tor supplements CILIP’s main knowledge and skills base.

With three levels of professional registration (Certification, Chartership and Fellowship) there are entry points for everyone in the sector. The recently developed Knowledge Management routes opens the door even wider, allowing those working in the KM sector to match their skills and knowledge to thier role. More than 200 people have gone through professional registration over the past 12 months – either for the first time, or through the revalidation process.

Advocacy and representation CILIP’s advocacy work over the last 12 months has pushed a number of issues up the political agenda, helping to amplify the voice of the profession. CILIP has been involved in several high-profile cam- paigns; political advocacy through the All Party Parliamentary Group for Libraries, Information and Knowledge – including sessions on how public libraries are helping their communities through the cost-of-liv- ing crisis; the vital role of school libraries in supporting literacy recovery; and the role of librarians and knowledge specialists in health giving clinical staff the ‘Gift of Time’. There have also been meetings and briefings with parliamentarians away from the APPG. CILIP secured a seat on the DCMS Media and Information Literacy Taskforce, and submitted written respons- es on Government consultations including the Digital Economy Bill (and equivalent in Wales).

CILIP also convened and launched the Media and Information Literacy Alliance (MILA) with support from the Informa- tion Literacy Group; and the Heritage Collections Advisory Group to advocate for specialist collections, knowledge and research in libraries with support from the Rare Books and Special Collections Group.

This year’s Libraries Week celebration attracted thousands of library users, of all ages. The theme for the week-long celebration of libraries was Never Stop Learning and helped libraries in all sectors showcase the services that help people access lifelong learning resources.

Projects and programmes

Echoing one of the main themes from the We Are CILIP action plan, sustainability was a large part of CILIP’s projects through the year. The Green Library Partnership

launched, bring libraries and library professionals together to look at how to libraries can deliver and lead on sustain- able projects within their communities. The partnership (www.cilip.org.uk/GreenLi- braries) is led by CILIP in collaboration with the British Library, Arts Council England, Libraries Connected and Julie’s Bicycle and is open to all library services.

The partnership provides a forum for environmental best-practice in libraries and has also funded six pilot projects across England. The results will inform future strategy and help others learn and develop their own projects. CILIP’s free Green Libraries Confer-

ence takes place on 24 March 2023 at the Wellcome Trust, offering a chance to join the conversation and find out more about how libraries can be agents of positive change for our environment. Visit www.cilip.org.uk/GreenLibrariesEvents to find out more and to register. Work continued on the Great School Libraries campaign, with additional funding secured to extend the project and help improve the research base around school libraries, and qualified school library staff. This autumn saw CILIP work with Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis on a campaign to ensure warm spaces for the most vulnerable in society. CILIP devised a set of guidelines to help public spaces, including libraries, can take part in initiatives to keep people warm amidst rising fuel bills and the wider cost-of-liv- ing crisis. Several projects have looked at specif- ic aspects of the profession – from the Independent Review of Public Library Financing to the launch of the new work- force mapping project, produced with cross-sector support from eight partner organisations. Outcomes will help shape future strategy for the wider profession. Members and individual library, infor- mation and knowledge sector workers will also see benefits from CILIP’s work to develop new tools and resources. A public library induction pack, welcoming new starters to the profession will launch next year; CILIP’s Digital Leadership for libraries course (www.cilip.org.uk/digital-lead- ership-course) is available now; and CILIP secured support for two cohorts of Health and Digital Literacy Pilot Projects, fund- ing collaboration between libraries and health partners.
