did the fi gures for the Emmanuel Point shipwreck galleon model also. T e varnished stain on the stand and base of the display was chosen because, looking from above the barca, it gives the appearance of the vessel sitting in shallow water over the bay sand along the coast.


T e goal in building this display was to present to a museum visitor an appearance of these crude little barges that is as close as possible to Cabeza de Vaca’s description with additional reconstruction suggestions from experts in the fi eld of nautical archeology. First and last, though, we will never know for sure.


Steve Harris is a physician in private practice in Dothan, Alabama and an active faculty member of the US Army School of Aerospace Medicine at Ft. Rucker. He has built models as a hobby for over fi ſt y years. Over time, he has built a collection depicting the development of the ship from ancient times to the present. Since 2007, he has had the opportunity to work with Florida archaeologists to construct eight model projects relating to sixteenth-century Spanish explorations of the State. T ese model projects belong to various universities and departments of the State of Florida. He has been author and co-author of several magazine and journal articles about the models and the various ships they depict.
