scrap glued across the uprights above and below the bow and stern pieces. (Figure 12)


Gardner’s table of off sets does not provide angles for the stem and stern pieces. T ey can be derived from the loſt ed profi le drawing. Cut matching triangles from card stock to check the rakes of the bow and stern pieces. Cut these timbers to the proper angles and glue them in place on the bottom.


Now erect the completed frames on the bottom. Frame #5 should be positioned so that it is centered on its section line and its center mark aligns with the centerline of the bottom and at 90 degrees to it. Frames 5 through 9 should have the side with the cleat facing forward. Frames 1 through 4 should have the side with the cleat facing aſt .


With the building board resting on a smooth fl at surface, a table bench or even the fl oor, and fi rmly held in position with a couple of bricks at the ends, glue the frames in their proper positions. A standard adjustable try square can be moved about on the fl at surface with a careful eye to ensure that the frames dry plumb.


Bracing


All bracing can be done with scrap wood strips of any kind or strips cut from basic basswood sheet. First glue two strips on the inside faces of the vertical members screwed to the building board at bow and stern. T ey should be positioned well above the bow and stern pieces and notched and tack-glued to the cross spalls of the fi rst frame at each end, as shown in Figure 12. Notch and tack-glue scrap wood about three inches long near the port and starboard extremities of all the frames, thus tying them all together. Use the try square to ensure all frames are plumb. (Figures 13 and 14)


Bevels


T e frames of the bateau will be beveled in much the same manner as bulkheads are beveled on kit- built models. Using a sanding stick or fi le, bevel the outside edges of all the frames by eye following the fore and aſt curve of the edge of the bottom. Using a try batten sprung fore and aſt from time to time will help with accuracy.


T e bevel on the edge of the bottom is the most critical but relatively easy to accomplish. Select a small fl at fi le about the thickness of the frames.
