Vol. 64, No. 3 Autumn 2019 206
20. T e second stage of preparing the scarf. Note that the use of a straight-edge ensures that the two vertical cuts will match and be parallel.
be moved down below the line showing the top of the plank just below it. Using a bit of scrap cut to the width of the lap as a gauge, move it along the lower line to mark points below the lower line. Apply the batten to these points and describe a second line, which is the bottom of the new plank. It should follow the same curve as the line just above it.
21. A view of the stern timber with the garboard plank in position and the notch for the second plank properly cut to 1/16-inch at the top and dressed to be fl ush at the bottom. Note pencil marks indicating the top of planks and the lap of the second plank over the garboard.
Once all three planks are secured, the hull can be removed from the building board. Plug the screw holes in the bottom with dowels. Carefully saw off frame heads and stem and stern pieces at the sheer line. Cut away excess wood along the bottom of the garboard plank, and fi le and sand it to match the outside edge of the bateau bottom.
22. T e completed hull without nonstructural details. T is hull was planked with straight-edged planks, thus producing a slightly narrower and shallower hull amidships.
