NEWS ROUND-UP TFWA cancels 2020 Singapore exhibition

This year’s TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference in Singapore (10-14 May) has been cancelled. The decision was taken at a TFWA

Management Committee and Board meeting held on 5 March in light of escalating uncertainty surrounding the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) and the ongoing threat it poses to international travellers. TFWA last terminated the event in

2003 due to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak, which infected an estimated 8,098 people and killed 774 between November 2002 and July 2003 [Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention]. In a statement, TFWA President Alain

Maingreaud said: “This is not a decision that we wanted to take, nor is it one the Board and Management Committee has taken lightly. “However, we feel that cancelling the event is the best and most responsible

course of action, given the health crisis that has spread throughout the world, and the huge impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on our market. “We trust that our customers and

business partners, especially in Asia Pacific, will understand our decision and accept that it has been taken with the best interests of the industry, and those who serve it, in

mind. We remain fully committed to our mission to provide the duty free & travel retail industry with a platform to prosper, and we will return to Asia Pacific in 2021 with renewed vigour and confidence in our industry’s resilience and capacity for re-invention.” As highlighted on p4, the 2020 Summit of the Americas has also been cancelled.

2020 Travel Retail Awards relocates to London

Following TFWA’s decision to cancel the 2020 TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference, TRBusiness can confirm that the Travel Retail Awards ceremony will be relocated to London in June. The precise date and venue will be communicated in the near future. The Awards ceremony, which will take

place at a prestigious London hotel, will be preceded by a complimentary half-

day seminar during which TRBusiness will host the inaugural Travel Retail Sustainability Forum (TRSF), initially planned to take place during the 2020 Duty Free & Travel Retail Summit of the Americas (see p4), also cancelled due to concerns over the novel coronavirus (Covid-19). The TRSF agenda will discuss some of

the many challenges facing the travel retail sector on single-use plastic waste and address the solutions and opportunities for the industry, including focused perspectives from different stakeholders (see p19 for more information). The session will preview some of the

excellent nominations submitted for the ‘Best Green Initiative at an Airport Award’, the first-time winner of which will be announced during the evening Awards ceremony. The seminar will also feature a detailed

consumer insights presentation from TRBusiness’ research partner m1nd- set drawn from the panel of 5,000 consumers who are currently (at the time of writing) casting their votes on the awards nominations. A record 17 companies sponsoring the

2020 Travel Retail Awards will benefit from the extended showcasing throughout the day and evening. Changi Airport Group has signed up

for the third consecutive year as Headline Sponsor of the 2020 Awards. Platinum sponsors include Distell, Duty

Free Innovation, Foreo, Furla, Mars Wrigley and Moroccanoil. Gold sponsors for this year are Bluedog, Cabeau, Champagne Laurent-Perrier, Chupa Chups/Mentos, Duty Free Experts, Hanse Distribution, Lindt & Sprüngli, Pink Fish, Swarovski and Treasury Wine Estates.
