EXCLUSIVE: Travel Retail Sustainability Forum issues industry clarion call
TRBusiness in association with Duty Free Innovation (DFI) is rallying DF&TR stakeholders to join a long-overdue ‘green movement’ aimed at sparking new ideas and approaches to sustainability, notably the reduction of single-use plastic waste. Luke Barras-Hill reports.
T
oday’s consumers are compelling businesses – from start-ups to corporates – to
exercise their ‘green’ credentials; gone are the days when so-called ‘greenwashing’ rhetoric lulled shoppers into a comfy illusion that their purchases were cushioned at every turn by socially responsible and ecologically aware practices and decisions. Increased education surrounding
climate change, the need for carbon- offsetting and safeguarding a rapidly ailing environmental ecosystem has taken a new twist of momentum of late. TRBusiness and DFI are pushing the industry to sign up to the TR Plastic Pledge and join the Travel Retail Sustainability Forum (TRSF), a coalition designed to spark a well- overdue ‘green movement’ that challenges every stakeholder to ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ plastic.
New location, fresh impetus Shortly before TRBusiness went
to
press, news surfaced that the Duty Free & Travel Retail Summit of the Americas in Orlando had been cancelled, putting on hold – at least for the time being – the first iteration of the TRSF. This was originally due to take
place on 30 March at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Orlando, Florida. Eager attendees will no doubt have been disappointed by the decision to cancel the show – and as a result, the 90-minute session – which aimed to address a wide spectrum of challenges facing the travel retail sector on single-use plastic waste.
