LATAM REPORT: JOSÉ LUIS DONAGARAY
understands that Imperial Tobacco, JTI, Philip Morris and BAT are all onboard at this point.] After highlighting the problems
facing tobacco at last year’s conference, this year we are insisting that many of the problems tobacco is facing are not just limited to tobacco. They will affect the whole business. I am going to insist this again this year.

[On Brazilian border town shops]: “The Receita de Federal de Brasil [the tax office in Brazil] is dealing with some other political issues right now which are much more important, but the law has been approved so the shops will come. It may be tomorrow, in two months, one year, but it will come…definitely. It will happen.”
José Luis Donagaray, ASUTIL
Of course as the environment stabilises, it is ASUTIL’s job to try to ensure that damaging regulation does not stall early signs of recovery. In terms of advocacy, what is ASUTIL currently working on? We had meetings in Orlando (at the IAADFS show) with people from tobacco companies and with people from the ETRC. We are working on the challenges the tobacco industry is facing. Our next meeting will be in Rio
during the ASUTIL conference where we will deliver a special strategy for Latin America coordinated with IAADFS, ASUTIL, the ETRC and the tobacco companies. [TRBusiness
You and I have been talking about potential stores opening in Brazilian border towns for a long time now. When do you think we’ll see one actually open? As you know, the law has been approved [originally 2012], but this has not yet been implemented. It’s a very, very complex law and it’s very, very difficult to implement. The Receita de Federal de Brasil
[the tax office in Brazil] is dealing with some other political issues right now which are much more important, but the law has been approved so the shops will come. It may be tomorrow, in two months, one year, but it will come…definitely. It will happen.
We know ASUTIL is working with the IAADFS for next year’s Summit of the Americas. Can you share any more about the potential participation of FDFA in this show; if not for next year’s event then for some time in the future? I think the FDFA have some agreements with a hotel for the next two to three years, which makes things a bit difficult for them. So maybe we’ll do a soft landing with them in the next two years. We have an excellent relationship
with them. They will come to the shows in between, but they have some contracts signed already and
IAADFS President ‘optimistic’ about Summit of the Americas
IAADFS President, Michael Payne says he is optimistic about the show next year, which will be held jointly by the South American duty free association
(ASUTIL) and IAADFS as they join forces to host the new ‘Summit of the Americas’

in March 2018. As reported by TRBusiness via its
Twitter feed in late March, the show will take place in Orlando at the Marriott World Centre next year between 18-21 March. TRBusiness understands that the
IAADFS and ASUTIL have entered into talks with some major international
beauty houses – who have attended the Duty Free Show of the Americas in the past – such as Dior and Chanel, among others about their attendance for the 2018 show. Although the initial conversations have
been very positive, Payne cannot yet confirm that they will actually participate next year, at least at this point.

could have to pay a big fine to get out of them. The idea is that we are working hard on this event now and we need to refine the format in the next two months. We will need to communicate
all the changes for next year – maybe at the Rio ASUTIL conference. We are discussing some formats,
we are doing some surveys and we have some ideas, but of course there will be a mix of networking time, stands and conference, because we know people really appreciate the conference element. You saw that at the IAADFS show. People were up early to be at the education sessions at 08.30am. When you have figures and you
have data from operators, suppliers and economic experts, people are very interested to learn more.
What can we expect from this year’s conference? You’re going to see a lot of figures at this year’s ASUTIL; good figures from Latin America. Peter Mohn (CEO of m1nd-set) will present the findings of a survey on pricing in duty free and the perception of price from shoppers, with a comparison with the High Street. We will also have Martín
Eurnekian, CEO, ACI Latin America- Caribbean, explaining what is going to happen with passengers, airlines, airports and also with the commercial business. We already know that Chile is
going to have a new airport; Paraguay this year will be announcing a new landlord and will have changes; Peru has seen a lot of changes; Brazil has changed all the airports, so in terms of airports it’s going to be a very interesting future. «
