TFWA ASIA PACIFIC SHOW REVIEW Asia Pacific DF&TR sales soar +9% in 2016


This year’s TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition attracted a record 3,087 visitors, up 6% from 2015’s attendance as the TFWA President revealed that Asia Pacific DF&TR sales grew 9.1% in 2016. Doug Newhouse and Luke Barras-Hill report.

his year’s 22nd TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference attracted a total


of 3,087 visitors, up a record +6% compared with the 2,905 who attended in 2016, and up 19.1% compared to the 2,591 total in 2015. The organisers, Tax Free World


Association said that this total comprised representatives from 1,220 companies, up by 3% from 1,186 in 2016 and up by 16.9% from 1,044 in 2015. TFWA added: “There were 1,273


key buyers at this year’s event, an increase of 18% from 1,081 in 2016 and up 29.1% from the 986 in 2015. Attendees from 301 companies increased by 10.3% from the 273 in 2016 and rose 16.2% from the 259 in 2015. “The exhibition occupied a total


of 10,254sq m, up 4% from 9,817sq m in 2016. A total of 316 companies exhibited, up 2% from 310 the previous year; 76 of these companies were new exhibitors. “Among the newcomers were a


raft of internationally-renowned names and exciting up-and-coming brands, including Giorgio Armani, Guerlain, Be Relax and Woollip.” The association also revealed


that there were a total of 385 meetings arranged through the TFWA ONE2ONE meeting service and those registered included 41 airports, 44 airlines and inflight sales operators, plus 11 cruise and ferry companies. The conference and workshops


were also well attended with 1,440 delegates addressed by a range of experts from the DF&TR business and beyond – an increase of 4% on last year’s 1,383. Yet another record was set with


989 guests attending the welcome cocktail at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, up from 851 last year.

In addition, 555 attended the Chill- Out Party at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and 746 came to the Singapore Swing Party at Universal Studios on Sentosa Island. Commenting, TFWA President


Erik Juul-Mortensen said: “We were delighted to see record figures across all key parameters at this year’s TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference. If ever we needed it, the event was confirmation of the huge importance of this region to the great industry that is duty free and travel retail.”


Americas sales drop 5% During the opening conference, Juul- Mortensen underlined these points in his welcome speech to delegates. He confirmed that Asia Pacific


once again spearheaded global duty free and travel retail revenues in 2016, but admitted that challenges persist. Drawing on preliminary data from


Generation Research, he revealed that duty free and travel retail sales in Asia Pacific grew by 9.1% to total $27.59bn. However, he also pointed out that


other regions suffered falls in sales: Europe ($18.83bn/ -0.1%); Americas


($10.68bn/ -5.3%); Middle East ($5.74bn/ -1.2%) and Africa ($0.72bn / -5%) as overall global duty free sales hit $63.6bn (+2.5%), Outlining the figures, the TFWA


President echoed a recent call from DFS CEO Philippe Schaus for industry stakeholders to demonstrate greater agility to successfully serve its customers. Perfumes & cosmetics continued


to lead the pack on a global category level, growing by 8.4% to reach $21.43bn, with APAC’s market share growing by an impressive +20.7%. However, a drop of -8.3% in


watches, jewellery and fine writing instruments demonstrated the challenge facing the category. “In terms of sales by channel,
