POTENTIAL HAZARDOUS BEHAVIORS

Every person at one time or another exhibits to some degree, an irrational, hazardous, unsafe behavior under stress. Problems arise when these ways of thinking and overt behaviors become habitual and extreme. It is important to recognize unsafe attitudes and behaviors in oneself and in others, so that corrective change can be initiated (corrective action). Unfortunately, attitudes and associated behaviors are very resistant to change.

Anti-authority (Don’t tell me!)

At the extreme, some people are resentful of and/or may regard regulations and procedures as silly or unnecessary; they do not like being told what to do.

Impulsivity (Do something quickly!) People who are “impulsive” often feel the need to do something, anything, immediately. They do not stop to think about what they are doing, or the consequences of their actions. Often, select the quickest “fix” and not the best alternative; They just do the first thing that comes to mind, right or wrong. Helicopter PIC : “Think I can make it between those trees?” Helicopter FO: Helicopter PIC:

“Nope!” “Oh yee have little faith...” Invulnerability (It won’t happen to me!)

This attitude is held by people who know accidents can happen to anyone, however, they believe they will never be personally involved. People who think this way are more likely to take chances and increase risk. “It’ll never happen to me”

Macho (I can do anything!)

People with this attitude seem to be always trying to prove they are better, stronger, smarter, than anyone else. They think “I can do it - I’ll show them.” People with this macho attitude often take unnecessary and dangerous risks with serious consequences. FO: “We’re not going to make airport curfew!” PIC: “I can make it”

Resignation (What’s the use?)

This attitude is reflected in people who believe they are unable to make a difference in what happens to them. When things go well, the person is apt to think that it is good luck. When things go badly, they may believe someone is out to get them; it is bad luck or fate, or the will of a higher being. These individuals will most often leave action to others. Sometimes, such people will even go along with unreasonable requests or unsafe procedures so as to “not to rock the boat.” PIC: “The weather is going below minimums, but we can make it.” FO: “You’re the boss”

Here are example modification antidotes for the five potentially unsafe attitudes:

Attitude: Anti-authority: Don’t tell me what to do. Antidote: “STOP! BART! - “Rules are usually right.”

Attitude Impulsivity: Do something quickly. Antidote: “STOP! BART! - “Not so fast. Slow down. Think first.”

Attitude: Invulnerability: It won’t happen to me. Antidote: “STOP! BART! - “It could happen to me.”

Attitude:Macho: I can do it. Antidote: “STOP! BART! - “Taking chances is foolish.”

Attitude: Resignation: What’s the use? Antidote: “STOP! BART! - “I DO have a choice. I can make a difference.”
