• Acute – short term • Chronic – long term

SOURCES OF STRESS • Personal issues • Unresolved conflict • Interruptions during critical phases of flight • Poor/ambiguous communication • Sudden change in plans/policies • Time pressure • Conformity pressure • Uncompleted tasks • Unfamiliar crewmembers • Boredom/fatigue

The fact of having stressors is NOT the problem. Not effectively dealing with one’s stress creates problems. Most stressors can be dealt with IF you have a plan to control your reactions and deal with an emergency in a calm and collected manner.

Humans have the ability to consciously choose how our stressors affect our performance. Your reaction to any stressor is choice…YOUR CHOICE!

SIGNS OF STRESS

• Illness • Poor communication • Diminished performance • Worry/anxiety • Fixation • Tension between people • Boredom/fatigue • Hazardous attitudes

The penalties are often severe if disabling stress is not dealt with quickly in an emergency situation; the consequences of stress can be life threatening.
