MISSION ANALYSIS

What is Mission Analysis? Mission Analysis refers to the ability to develop short term, long term and contingency plans including the ability to coordinate, allocate and monitor crew and aircraft resources.

There are 3 Phases of Mission Analysis

Preflight: Without an effective pre-plan MA can be greatly reduced.

• Remember the 5 P's - Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance

• Review ground operations such as an aborted takeoff, taxi and ground communication

• List possible negative events from takeoff through landing

• Assign a realistic probability of an event occurring by rating different aspects of the flight

• Construct a plan to respond to manage the higher probability

In a NASA Ames Research study, of 1,488 Corporate Flight Crewmembers:

“Nearly three-quarters of respondents reported having “nodded off” during a flight.

Despite these reports, less than half (39%) reported making arrangements for one pilot to nap in the cockpit seat during flight. ..”

Post Flight: You can always learn from a mission review. Discuss what went right or wrong during the flight. Use focused selective review in an interactive fashion. Immediate timely analysis will provide the most accurate feedback.

The parts of a good briefing include: • Relevant issues are addressed • Events are presented in a logical sequence • Amount of detail is appropriate • Time is set for Q & A

Inflight: Consistent monitoring of potential ongoing problems will allow you to react quickly when necessary.

As the mission progresses discuss plans to deal with what could come next. Report all changes in the mission no matter how small
