THE “CUS MODEL”
Concern, Uncomfortable, Safe -- words used to convey important information to other FAs, FTs and the pilots.
The CUS acronym identifies words that are intended to give crewmembers a communication tool to heighten decision-making awareness if they have determined that normal communication methods are working. This language can be used to escalate the importance of information.
Crewmember use of the CUS acronym should be considered a RED FLAG and cause a re-examination of the current course of action!
The crewmember should begin their statement with one of the 3 CUS words to signal the gravity of the message.
CUS examples: “I’m concerned that ____________________” “I’m uncomfortable with ____________________” “I think it is not safe ___________________”
