DECISION MAKING
What is Decision Making? Effective decision-making refers to the ability to use logical and sound judgment to make decisions based on available information.
The decision making process is influenced by the type of problem, degree of risk, time available, situational awareness, and resources.
Decisions do not good unless they are turned into ACTION!
Decision Making Model
The PIC has final responsibility and authority for decision-making. However, all crewmembers must participate in the decision-making process by using the Decision Making Model. This model is a formal step- by-step approach to making and evaluating operational situations.
• Define the problem • Generate choices • Evaluate choices • Select a choice • Implement the choice selected • Critique
Factors that Promote Good Decision Making: • Teamwork • Utilization of all resources, people and skills available • Effective use of time in which to make a decision • Alert crewmembers • Decisions based on proven strategies and prior experience
• Synergy (“The increased effectiveness that results when two or more people or businesses work together”)
• Attitude
Barriers to Good Decision Making • Inability to determine “How to overcome a barrier” • Lack of time in order to determine good outcomes • Inaccurate or ambiguous information, or the inability to crosscheck decision making input
• Pressure to perform • Rank difference or misused assertive behavior
