Raise more by making text-giving

part of your virtual event If you’re holding a virtual event such as a quiz or comedy night this term, text-giving can be an excellent way to encourage donations. While virtual events bring the community together, it can be a challenge to structure them in way that raises the funds you need to support the school. Capture the moment: adding

a text-giving campaign to your online event offers parents a way to give an amount they can afford at precisely the time they are most engaged. For the best results, promote

your text-giving word live on the night as well as on social media before and after the event. That way, people who can’t make the event can still support the PTA. Invite grandparents and those living further afi eld to support

you. They can attend your event or support the cause by making a text donation from anywhere in the country. Last spring, United We Stream

held a bank holiday online comedy event for the benefi t of fi ve charitable organisations, including St John’s Hospice. The ‘No Audience with Jon Richardson and Friends’ event attracted

114,000 viewers. Supporters were encouraged to donate the cost of a virtual ticket, with suggested contribution levels starting at just £5. Throughout the two-hour-long performance, verbal and on-screen calls to action prompted viewers to make further donations by text. On the night, the audience donated over £2,900 to the hospice through text donations, with even more given after the event ended.

Hold a silent auction

Secure some prizes, whip up the excitement and watch the bids roll in – an online silent auction is a great way for participants to get prizes they want, and costs the PTA little to run. ‘We wanted a dedicated system that

would be simple for parents to use, and using DONATE worked really well,’ says Lisa Greenwood, treasurer at Ermysted’s Grammar School Parents Association (818 pupils). ‘We put together 17 hampers using items donated by local fi rms and parents. Once they were uploaded to the auction site, parents could view each lot, along with data showing the current highest bid, how many days were left, and the number of bids placed. Supporters bid by fi lling in either their email address or a mobile number. If they were outbid, they received a message so they could bid again. DONATE was great value for us, and we raised over £700.’

Organise a text raffl e

Request donations from your supporters and hold a text raffl e. Birch Copse Primary School PTA (420 pupils) raised £1,080 this way last term. ‘Running a paper raffl e can be tricky,’

says co-chair Jess Armstrong. ‘People might fi ll in their details incorrectly or lose their tickets. Afterwards, you have to deposit the cash at the bank. In 2020, a traditional raffl e wasn’t an option, and although a text raffl e was totally new to us, it only took a couple of days to get set up. We priced tickets at £5, selected our text word – MEGA – and started promoting it. Parents bought tickets by text and prizes could be collected or delivered to them after we’d done the draw.’
