Strengthen the bond with your school


Having clear lines of communication and mutual respect will lead to a cohesive fundraising strategy


T


here are many reasons why it pays to have a strong relationship with your school: it can make running


the PTA easier; it makes sense to be working towards the same goals; and it’s more enjoyable for everyone when you’re working together. A difficult relationship can affect morale, productivity and happiness. ‘The PTA is very much a joint


venture between the school and the parents,’ says Francesca Coates, co-chair at Millbrook Parent Teacher Association in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester. ‘We have a direct line of communication to the headteacher, office and deputies, and at least one member of staff comes to meetings. ‘The main thing is that there is


respect and trust,’ she continues. ‘The school are appreciative that we are volunteers, with busy jobs and families, and we understand that


while fundraising is really important for the school, the headteacher has the bigger vision. Sometimes we suggest ideas we love and the school will say no, but it’s not because they don’t like the idea or want to be difficult, they are just looking at it from a different angle.’ ‘We think of our PTA as a brand


that serves the business of the school,’ says Katie Rimell, chair of Friends of Stratford Girls’ Grammar School in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. ‘The school is a business that is run by professionals, and factoring this into our decisions and communications is key to our success. The PTA exists to support the school, and we should therefore align with its brand and ethos.’
