PTAs share their accounts of tried-and-tested fundraising events to inspire you

‘Our socially distanced fun run raised £1,750’

‘Despite the challenges last year brought, we knew our fun run could still go ahead, albeit in a different way. This was the third year we’d run the event. Pupils and their families usually run two laps of a 1km course in the school grounds. Our fabulous staff are always willing to get involved, so we hold a “teacher chase” at the same time. Teachers wear tag rugby belts and the children chase after them, trying to collect as many tags as they can. Points are awarded to the house that collects the most tags. This time, participants had to run –

or walk – their own 2km, which could be completed in their family group or support bubble on a set day in October. We asked our supporters what they enjoyed most about the event in previous years. It was clear that teacher involvement was a big part of the fun, so the teachers agreed to do their 2km run the week before the main event. Their times were posted on Facebook and we challenged the children to beat them. To make the event feel more like a

real race, our graphic designer created a bib that participants could download, print and wear on their T-shirts. The headteacher addressed the children via

video, which the school tweeted and played to the children in their class bubbles. Once everyone had completed their run, they were encouraged to send in photos – and the office posted over 50 in the school newsletter. We collected sponsorship money

using Virgin Money Giving. The staff also set up their own sponsorship pages. We decided not to offer a paper sponsor form and we may have lost out on some sponsorship because of that, but being able to collect Gift Aid has helped. In total, we raised £1,650, which is slightly more than last year. In previous years, we’ve also run a

medal design competition before the fun run, and we provide hairspray, face-painting and refreshments on the day, as well as a bouncy castle. With so much less to do this year, our PTA was definitely more efficient in its fundraising, but we have all suffered from the lack of community engagement and would definitely go back to running the bigger event. our scarecrow trail!’ ‘In spring 2019, we ran our first scarecrow trail, inspired by those we had seen in other villages. Our chosen theme was children’s books. Families produced some wonderful creations and entries included The Gruffalo, The Hungry Caterpillar and Jack and the Beanstalk. The event ran during the Easter holidays. We charged £3 for a trail sheet, which included a treat at the end for every child, and we asked visitors to choose their favourite scarecrow and awarded prizes to the winning entries. We started planning in January, seeking prize donations, designing trail sheets and maps, and registering those willing to display a scarecrow. Supporters could obtain a registration form from a number of local businesses, and we gave out “how to make a scarecrow” sheets. Our village really got into the spirit of things, and we ended up with 40 scarecrows! Our costs were minimal. People made their own scarecrows; Tesco and Aldi donated sweets; the school printed trail sheets and registration forms; and a local sign company made banners, which we displayed in neighbouring villages. We paid for some Facebook advertising a week before the event began and bought a few extra
