Free furniture and tech
Recently established charity Business2Schools can provide schools with high-quality furniture and IT equipment no longer needed by companies. ‘We effectively “recycle” products and resources that are unwanted after office refurbishment or when businesses relocate,’ says CEO Lindsey Parslow (left). HELP WITH UNIVERSITY ACCESS A series of prizes has been created to support pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in accessing top universities. The prizes were established by educational charity The Access Project (TAP), with funds donated by family and friends of the late Imperial College London mathematics professor Jeff Cash. Professor Cash, who passed away in June, was the first person in his family to attend university. With more than £1,600 raised so far, TAP will provide vouchers of £25 and upwards for prizewinners over two years, enabling them to buy textbooks to support their wider reading. The prizes recognise students’ dedication to their studies. One of the Year 13 students recognised by TAP this
year is Jessica Kappy (right), a student at City of London Academy Highbury Grove, who secured a place to study medicine at Oxford. She is the first person in her family to go to university and judges were particularly impressed by the support she has given to other TAP students. TAP supports students through a combination of personalised tuition and in-school mentoring. UCAS data shows that TAP students are four times more likely than other students to attend a top university.

EARN FROM ONLINE PAYMENTS CivicaPay Education is a new platform for schools to collect online parental payments for meals, textbooks, uniforms and other items directly, without the need for a third party. This allows schools to generate additional income by adding a mark-up onto bulk-bought resources. The secure portal was built in partnership with schools and councils, and designed to improved parental engagement.

monitors, and gym and library equipment. For instance, Tesco donated 3,000 monitors that were distributed to schools across Chichester and Redhill. Nearly 600 schools are signed up so far, and the charity tries to match them with companies in the same area to reduce transportation costs and environmental impact. Business2Schools has been supporting the
BBC’s ‘Make a Difference’ appeal by sourcing free laptops and other IT equipment for schools during lockdown. The charity works closely with commercial property agents Jones Lang LaSalle to promote the ‘circular economy’ of re-use and recycle, and also to help schools raise money by recycling their own unwanted stock, particularly wood and metal products. PLANNING FOR
UNCERTAINTY The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has launched a tiered guide to support school leaders with planning for the unpredictable year ahead. It proposes a tiered model that focuses on high-quality teaching, targeted academic support and wider strategies. Many of the approaches will be familiar to experienced school leaders so the guide aims to supplement expertise, offering handy questions and recent school case studies. The EEF Guide to Supporting School Planning: A Tiered Approach to 2020-21 is available at
