By Rob Kelly THE REGENERATION GAME
As we continue to mark the 20th anniversary of Lancashire Business View, here we look back at our November/December 2005 issue.
Editor Andrew Calvert grabbed an exclusive interview with Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the North West Regional Development Agency (NWRDA), to talk about plans for regeneration in the county.
He spoke about a raft of major initiatives in the pipeline, including a university campus for east Lancashire, a new business park on the former Michelin site in Burnley and a world class aerospace centre at Samlesbury.
Steven told us: “Lancashire is one of the key economic drivers for the region.
“The North West has a world class aerospace
industry, with a leading science-based and high value-added manufacturing and services sector.”
He also spoke of the ambition of creating a ‘University of East Lancashire’ and added: “There is a need to improve access to higher education in east Lancashire.”
“There is good quality provision in colleges particularly Blackburn, but there is potential to open up the Michelin site as a campus, a University of East Lancashire.”
Lancashire Business View writer Fiona Ritchie found herself in deep water in a feature with chartered accountant Mark Schofield, who was a coach at Clitheroe Canoe Club in his spare time.
He talked about how kayaking had given him some tips to take back to the workplace, revealing,
“through the coaching courses I have learned how to motivate and communicate with people.
“I found out how to encourage people through the use of positive words too.”
We also heard from Ann Parsons, who at the age of 40 had launched her own book-keeping business in Accrington.
Meanwhile, celebrity chef Nigel Haworth and business partner Craig Bancroft were helping to put the Ribble Valley on the UK gastronomic map through their work at Northcote in Langho.
Craig told us: “When guest chefs come to Northcote they are overwhelmed by the beautiful countryside and the wonderful produce that is grown locally.”
