We are really small, there are 27 of us in total and that includes our depots, our drivers, the whole staff team and we have different types of customers, so we have to adapt. We’re not a call centre, there’s no ‘press three for sales, press four for marketing,’ it is us at the end of the phone.

Our customers want to call us and we’re passionate about them, we give out a lot of free advice. We just care so much. We know every single customer and we go to see them quite often.

We celebrated our win by telling people. We sent an email out to all our customers to let them know we’d won this award because of them. To win a Red Rose Award just gives you that edge, it’s opened the door for us so much.

We recognise that we can have a positive influence on the community, whether that’s in recruitment or supporting the charities we work alongside. That social values piece for us is really key. It is the culture we’ve have, and it’s ingrained in all of us.

I set out on my own four years ago with a very clear strategy. I knew the businesses I wanted to go after that would make the brand big.

I went out to try and innovate. I got those things in place, and then it was all about the service delivery that sat behind it.

You have to have an overriding passion to do what’s right and make a difference to people’s lives and that’s the key thing, more than money. Employing people, I’ve tried to find those that share the same passion, share the energy, and really want to be part of the vision and that has driven us to where we’ve got to.

The awards have given people something to be proud of. It meant a lot for the whole team to be part of that journey. And you get access to brilliant businesses that you want to work with.

Our values are trust, innovation, honesty, transparency, safety. Some are borne out of the fact we’re trying to protect our employees and clients. But you can relate them to your working life as well.

We’ve never won a local award before, so it was really special, because we are very much into social values and flying the flag for Lancashire. Our clients have shared the celebration with us. We’ve had some really great feedback from them. When we’re in client meetings, they’ve actually applauded us. It’s been just fabulous, and we wouldn’t have won it without them.

Having been a judge for a number of years, what makes people stand out for me is the passion and vibe you can feel off certain individuals.

Anyone can tell you stats, but it’s all about the culture, the people, and the enthusiasm actually presenting the story.

In particular judging the Not-for-Profit category this year, it was tough choosing a winner when they’re all winners. The amount of time and support they put in, you just think, wow! You do actually get a tear in your eye, and it’s real.

We are former winners as well, that’s how we’ve continued to be involved in the Red Rose Awards. Entering focuses the mind. You reflect on what you’ve achieved as a business, how passionate you are about things, the staff, the culture, all these things we’ve talked about. It allows the rest of the team to reflect as well.

Looking at judging, one of the reasons we come back to the Red Rose Awards is that, like a lot of other firms, we have values, and one is that we are real people. I know it’s a bit trite to say ‘people buy from people’ but that’s where as a rule their culture is embedded. Talking to their customers and clients, getting on with them, that has to be the starting point.

Obviously, we want to see a business that’s doing well and thriving, whether it’s a new start or an established company. Are they going well?

Apart from that it is ‘Why are you different?’ ‘What makes me want to listen to your story?’ ‘Have you got a story?’ It usually boils down to people and that’s where we get excited when we’re listening to those who come and pitch to us.
