US DEAL AIMS TO DELIVER

Not all the cross-border M&A activity has seen Lancashire businesses facing the future with new overseas owners.

Blackburn-based multichannel logistics firm Staci has gone Stateside and acquired fulfilment specialist Amware based in Cleveland, Ohio.

The acquisition of the $200m turnover US business takes the total Staci group beyond £600m annual revenues, with 3,000 employees working in 73 fulfilment centres in eight countries.

This latest acquisition follows on from a record group and UK annual performance in 2022, during which UK revenues reached the highest in its 35-year history and included the opening of its seventh UK fulfilment centre in east Lancashire.

Staci’s management team says the addition of Amware to the group, announced in March, will create major opportunities for clients and workers both the UK and US.

The deal means that the US is now the group’s leading geography with approximately 30 per cent of revenues.

Wayne Chapman, UK managing director, says: “This is a significant acquisition that really shows the ambition, direction and robust trading performance of the group, and will bring incredible benefits and best practice across the whole business.

“The future for Staci and our team members is incredibly bright as we continue to go from strength to strength locally, nationally and internationally with many of our team members already experiencing working with colleagues across Europe and America.”

This deal shows the ambition, direction and robust performance of the group

and local brands. The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, means that the business has reached a “critical size” in the US. It began its American operation in March 2019 with the opening of a first warehouse in Jersey City.

Expanding its US footprint is at the core of Staci’s strategy. Following Amware’s acquisition, Staci’s US branch will now be able to reach 98 per cent of the US territory in two days via ground transportation.

Staci says that as well as expanding its reach geographically, the Amware deal will also allow it to keep developing its presence in e-commerce logistics and to keep strengthening in “dynamic verticals” such as health and wellness.

Staci opened its latest Blackburn fulfilment centre in October last year in Walker Park, next to its UK head office.

It became the company’s 64th site overall. Staci signed a ten-year lease on the facility. The site handles B2C and B2B orders for major brands across multiple industries, including cosmetics, FMCG and technology.

Speaking at the opening of the 100,000 sq ft fulfilment operation, Wayne said: “Despite a challenging few years for the economy, we’re extremely proud that Staci continues to book the trend thanks to our diversified portfolio of logistics services.”
