COLLEGE INVESTS IN ENGINEERING AND RENEWABLE TECHNOLOGIES

West Lancashire College are pleased to announce significant investment to their Engineering Department and into the development of a brand-new Renewable Technologies Centre as a result of local demand in these industries.

One of the college’s strategic priorities is to provide an innovative and responsive led curriculum which meets the needs of employers and addresses local and regional skills shortages. With this in mind the college recently opened The School of Science, a hi-tech centre with a fully equipped Engineering suite giving students access to the very best specialist equipment and technology as they train for their future careers. The School of Science aims to unlock potential and give local people the ability to drive forward growth for the area.

In addition to the facilities, the college have also invested to grow their Engineering delivery team, and boast their Engineering Managers, Assessors and Tutors to be some of the best in the business! The newly formed team have vast academic and industry experience, working previously at leading colleges in the Northwest. Their previous industry roles include time served Toolmaker, Electrical Design Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Nuclear De-commissioning Project Engineer and Engineer in the Automotive Industry.

The college now offer a range of Engineering qualifications from their hi-spec centre which includes Engineering Technical Support Technician Apprenticeship and BTEC Level 3 Engineering.

Works have also commenced on a Renewable Technologies Centre, funded by the Lancashire Skills Development Fund. The Centre aims to raise awareness and highlight the opportunities and benefits of low/ net-zero carbon operations to Lancashire SMEs, and to assist SMEs to develop low/net-zero carbon strategies and associated training plans.

Systems in the new centre include an introduction to low carbon energy technology including air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind turbine technology, grey water harvesting and other renewables. In addition, the centre is equipped with full monitoring technology and generates real time key performance data that can be analysed to produce electronic reporting.

Gareth Sutton, Vice Principal said; “We are delighted to be in a position to offer such a fantastic opportunity for those wishing to train in the Engineering and Renewable Technologies sector. With the vast skills and experience held by our teaching team, complimented by the investment into hi-tech facilities you can be assured that whether you study as a full or part-time student, or as an Apprentice, you will be trained to the very highest standards and will leave fully equipped for industry.”

The College invite local employers and individuals wishing to find out more about training opportunities to their forthcoming Employer Event on Tuesday 6 June, 5pm-6.15pm. At the event attendees can view the new facilities and find out more about the training opportunities available at West Lancashire College, including Government funding and employer incentives.
