Expert View THE LEGACY BEHIND OUR LEADERS

by Susanna Cassey Office managing partner, Azets

Lancashire has a long history of producing great business leaders from the entrepreneurs behind the industrial revolution to the creators responsible for the Spinning Jenny, jet engine and Nori brick.

Lancashire has also put its own individual stamp on society, giving the world numerous inventions and products that we wouldn’t have been able to live without - many of these things are still used today.

Fast forward to 2022 and the leaders behind well-known names such as Ineos, boohoo, Hargreaves Lansdown and B&M all hail from the region.

Lancashire is also leading the way in its chosen industries. With more than 52,000 businesses generating £29bn per year, Lancashire has a

Tony Cann

Founder, Learning by Questions

Following his parents into the textile industry,

Tony’s shop floor experiences showed him the need for access to real-time data, inspiring him to launch his own technology company. He then entered the education sector when he chaired the East Lancashire Training and Enterprise Council, which led to him launching the electronic classroom whiteboard firm Promethean. In 2016 he established Learning by Questions, a classroom app that quizzes pupils on material that has been taught by their teacher. LBQ is funded by Bowland Charitable Trust, his family charity which also champions causes such as prison reform. He has been honoured with a CBE for services to training.

thriving economy. The county is a recognised world-leader in aerospace, advanced engineering and manufacturing, energy and higher education excellence.

I’m fortunate to witness great leadership on a daily basis. From the diverse clients I work alongside on their business journeys, they all share similar leadership characteristics, whatever their sector. Tenacity, passion and dedication to name but a few.

These people are not only growing their organisations and disrupting industries, but also creating jobs, innovating to develop smarter products and services, seeking opportunities to drive expansion overseas and actively putting purpose at the heart of what they do.

Ann

Jordan Chair, Lancashire Digital Skills Partnership

Ann’s business interests include her PR agency,

Benetimo, and the family-owned builder’s merchant Gutterking. She is perhaps better known for her contributions to a wide variety of community projects around Lancashire, including the support of skills, education and women in business. She is a director of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneur), a mentoring and networking group for new businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs. She is a founder member of Childline Business Committee, a member of the Womens International Network, chair of the Blackburn Cathedral board of trustees, a former governor of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn, a former chair of the Institute of Directors North West and previously served as the High Sheriff of Lancashire.

2021 was a tumultuous year for businesses for so many reasons. Despite the turmoil, many business leaders in the region managed to pivot, survive and even thrive under increasingly difficult circumstances - and put themselves in a good place for 2022. In my mind, this really demonstrates great leadership.

At Azets we’re also investing in Lancashire’s leaders of tomorrow as part of our ambitious growth plans to create 100 new jobs in the next three years across the North West. From recruiting apprentices and graduates from the region’s schools and universities, we’re passionate about training and development and supporting our people to thrive.

Kate

Shane Head of Blackpool cluster, Merlin Entertainment Group

Kate is one of the most influential figures in the Blackpool tourism sector. In 2016 she stepped up from her role as managing director of Blackpool Tower to regional director of parent company Merlin, which expanded her remit to include a string of attractions from Madame Tussauds to the Blackpool Dungeons and a proposed new Golden Mile entertainment venue set to open later this year. She also holds a number of community roles in the areas, serving as a non-executive director for Blackpool Transport, a board member of the Blackpool Pride of Place initiative and she is a former governor of Blackpool and the Fylde College.
