SILVERWOODS WASTE MANAGEMENT GO GREEN AWARD WINNER

Each year, Silverwoods collects, recycles and captures the carbon from 400,000 tonnes of industrial waste on behalf of its customers, using it to create substitute fertilisers for the agriculture sector - sending nothing to landfill.

The wastes collected range from coffee grounds, whey from dairies to waste lime from the cement industry. All of this waste is then applied to agricultural land as substitute liming agents and fertilisers with full Environment Agency approval.

There are many environmental advantages in this process. Our products replace the need for nutrients that would otherwise be provided by virgin quarried materials.

Our wastes are high-performing, improving soil fertility, correcting low pH and, as a result, improving crop growth. This, in turn, boosts the capture and sequencing of even more carbon.

On top of all this, the process means nothing is sent to landfill.

Silverwoods also supplies a network of Anaerobic Digesters throughout the UK with wastes that are broken down to capture methane which is used to produce renewable energy.

The work we do, backed by our investment in a 200-acre tree planting scheme, best demonstrates our Go-Green focus.

Other examples include our work with Lancaster University who are

helping us to quantify exact carbon savings and which will expand on our current R&D projects.

We are innovative too. We have obtained a Bespoke Installation Permit which allows us to carry out the processing of the lime wastes from the cement industry for use within agriculture.

In addition we have introduced our own electronic waste recoding system with all collections scanned in to ensure full and complete traceability.

With recent contract wins with Tarmac and Suez, plus the continued expansion of work with existing clients, Silverwoods continue to ‘green’ the world of waste.

What the judges said:

“A passionate, well-informed, ambitious and expert managing director is taking this business and its clients on a net-zero journey. Lots of excellent schemes and great work on their own carbon footprint. Excellent future plans make this an exciting player.”

BLACKBURN YOUTH ZONE NOT-FOR-PROFIT BUSINESS AWARD WINNER

Blackburn Youth Zone (BYZ) is a 21st century youth hub established with the aim of changing the prospects offered to five to 19-year-olds in the area.

When the pandemic hit, BYZ had to adapt quickly to navigate both social distancing measures, and operating with a reduced income.

The club transformed its offering to keep members engaged through online activities, welfare calls and outreach schemes, and importantly, continued to offer vital support.

We introduced projects to support some of the area’s most vulnerable families, including the launch of Youth Zone at Home, which gave virtual access to leisure and creative activities, informal education and support.

We delivered 25,000 free meals and self- care packages to vulnerable families, while 550 young people and community members received personal care products and 1,300

young people were supported with monthly health and wellbeing activities.

Our one-to-one work continued, with staff carrying out 4,353 welfare calls to the most vulnerable young people. Fifty children took part in targeted early intervention, emotional health and wellbeing programme, Mind Moose.

544 young people benefitted from employability skills, with 164 gaining accreditations.

309 young people at risk of entering the care system have benefited from welfare calls, digital mentoring and internet youth club sessions, while 36 considered to be at risk have received targeted wrap-around support through a transitions programme.

Also, to ensure vulnerable young people didn’t go hungry at Christmas, 5,000 children and young people were given hot meals over the festive period.

What the judges said: “A great motto: ‘Whatever it takes’ was so appropriate for the team who ensure that no one is left side-lined in their work.

The commitment and sense of purpose was overwhelming, and the examples used of their beneficiaries really helped to state their case and show their purpose in the community.”

In order to provide the support that young people deserve, BYZ needs to raise a minimum of £1m every year. Our charity is powered by an army of volunteers and financed by fundraising efforts such as our current Paint The Town Orange challenge and a network of local patrons. Accounting for around a half of our income, the patron network consists of businesses from across a range of sizes and sectors based in and around the town.
