Utility giants like Anglian Water are now able to conduct zero-emission drainage operations on a daily basis, marking a significant environmental milestone.
“This month we are also unveiling a new entry-level electric sewer jetter,” says Pieters. “Whilst still offering Rioned’s renowned performance and reliability, the new lower-cost machine aims to make the transition to electric more affordable for the smaller contractor.”
Embracing intelligence
Acknowledging that the sewer networks are under increased pressure due to urbanisation and climate change, Rioned’s Pieters is a keen advocate of technology and the role it should play in managing and maintaining the networks.
“Increased connectivity is transforming communication, monitoring, and reporting for engineers,” he says. “We've made significant investments in developing intelligent applications that capture and transmit critical data concerning machine performance and operational conditions. This data, from applications such as Rioned’s eControl Touch, empowers engineers to work more intelligently, enhancing operational efficiency by reducing fuel and water

He further envisions a shifting industry landscape towards a more service- oriented model heavily reliant on data: “The role of technology in this transformation is paramount, be it through smart drains that vigilantly oversee flows, blockages and contaminants, sustainable SUDs drainage systems that mitigate environmental impact, or our ongoing work on intelligent equipment solutions. Ultimately, it's all about equipping the industry with the tools to operate in a cleaner and more efficient manner."

At Andy Guest Jetters’ manufacturing base in West Yorkshire, Managing Director Mathew Owen says the business has made significant strides in developing a more sustainable business model but acknowledges that the economic climate plays a key part in customers’ decision-making: "Undoubtedly, economic pressures are being keenly felt by our clients in the utility sectors. The transition to eco- friendly drainage operations is well underway, but it's a journey marked by its fair share of challenges."
In recent years, Andy Guest Jetters has concentrated efforts on developing a comprehensive range of Stage V- compliant jetting machines. These endeavours were spurred on by new regulations introduced in 2020, which required a widespread redesign of high- pressure drain cleaning equipment to meet the updated standards.
“We've made a substantial investment in modernising our product portfolio to offer a range of diesel and petrol engine jetters that adhere to stringent emission regulations,” explains Owen. “We’re also exploring alternative power sources, such as electric, hybrid and power take- off (PTO) for the next generation of jetters.”
Owen acknowledges the impact of the present economic climate on their operations. "We're witnessing a growing demand for refurbished equipment due to the current economic situation. This is a realm where our technicians excel, whether it's for Andy Guest machines or third-party equipment. I firmly believe that recycling equipment and incorporating components that reduce emissions and fuel consumption form a pivotal facet of sustainable operations."
