MAIN FEATURE

“How we operate as a company is key to the environment – and our customers want us to be as green as possible – but at the end of the day our product and price has to be commercially viable for us and for the application. This makes the environmental element still secondary to the performance, but we want to do our bit too. Our staff run electric/hybrid vehicles but there are issues there too, along with range anxiety. These smaller nuclear pods they are talking about developing could help with the power loads but will need serious security.

“As for the future, we probably punch above our weight in the industry on environmental matters, and it has become second nature to us and to the culture of our organisation. Some products may become more recyclable but there’s not any one thing around to really revolutionise the industry in this area. So, we continue to do our best without panicking.”

Jan Pieters, CEO of Rioned, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of drainage equipment, said the industry has begun to see a significant shift towards more sustainable operations: “Within 10 years, the majority of newly purchased sewer cleaning machines will be fully electrically powered, and we’re proud to be a driving force behind this change.

“Rioned has led the way in innovations across the sewer cleaning sector, and in 2019 we became the world's first

manufacturer to develop a fully electric sewer jetting machine. We now have electric jetting units in operation across Europe, with users seeing the benefits in terms of enhanced performance and significantly lower operation and maintenance costs.”

Rioned’s eCityJet jetter is powered by a highly efficient battery pack offering comparable performance to a regular diesel jetting machine. The unit produces zero emissions, saving up to three tons of CO2 emissions annually. Almost silent in operation, it's ideal for urban use, even at night, and excels in confined spaces where diesel machines fall short.

Rioned say that the introduction of electric vans with extended driving ranges has further fuelled the adoption of the eCityJet.
