THE MAGAZINE FOR THE DRAINAGE,WATER &WASTEWATER INDUSTRIES

SPECIAL WORKS

With the problemidentified and the correct equipment in place, the contractor experienced no problems during the cleaning operation saying ‘the Picotemachine dealtwith the problemwith ease’. The drain was found to be holdingwater after removal of the tarmac/concrete, thiswas found to be due to a back-fall on the drain. Fastflow recommended re-lining of the drain to the client.

Commenting on the project Derek Sewell said: “Using the Picote Super Midimachinemade the job far easier than it should have been and I will be thinking about purchasing one for Fast FlowDrains in 2021. Workingwith CJ Kelly proved a vital cooperation as the company recommended the rightmachine to complete the job. The Picote Super

Midi is an excellentmachinewhich completedwhatmight have been a difficult task easily.

For CJ Kelly International Ltd John Kelly, Senior Partner said: “We have workedwith Fastflowon previous occasions andwe are pleased at how well this project progressedwith a completion thatmet all the requirements of the client. Recommending the Picote SuperMidiwas not a difficult choice given the capabilities of themachine. Itmust be understood however that in these sorts of circumstances the right machine has to be used for the right job, The Picote SuperMidi is just one of the rangeswe have available to contractorswithwhomwe are able to consult at any time for any job.”

Siltbuster helps protect Aquatic Ecosystems around £200m road scheme

Siltbuster, the leadingwater treatment specialist, has provided Costainwith fourmodular treatment solutions, to be used during the delivery of the £200mPrestonWesternDistributor Road, linking Preston and southern Fylde to theM55motorway.

The 2.5mile-long dual carriageway, set to open in 2023, includes a new motorway junction, four newbridges and three underpasses. The route goes past several surfacewatercourses, including the Savick Brook and the Lancaster Canal. With this inmind, Costain contacted Siltbuster at a very early stage in the project and tasked itwith planning thewater runoffmanagement.

To date, Siltbuster has deployed fourwater treatment systems to cover themultiple controlledwatercourseswherewater is being released fromthe site. Each location is regulated by the Environment Agency, with the Environmental Permit requiring total suspended solids be less than 100mg/l and a pH value between pH6 and pH9 to be achieved consistently.

In order to protect the northwest’s aquatic ecosystems and habitats, each Siltbuster unit needed to be capable of treating flows of up to 40m3/hr. To deliver this, all of the systems include two-stage flow proportional chemical dosing of coagulant and flocculant to improve the settlement rates of the very fine suspended clay solids, and an 8m3

tank completewithmixers and a HB50 lamella clarifier. Themodular nature of these solutionsmeans additional capacity can easily be added should the comingwet season create greater volumes ofwater needing to be treated.

Karl Heath, EnvironmentalManager at Costain, comments on itswater treatment approach: “We’ve beenmanaging thewater on site throughout the project startingwith basic settling techniques. By engaging Siltbuster early in the processwe couldmake surewewere ready to deploymore advanced systemswhen it became necessary at the end of the summer, in preparation for thewet season and the consequent increased surfacewater runoff. The Siltbuster systems have helped keep the project on track by ensuringwe are in linewith our environmental permit at all times, protecting the surrounding habitats as vigilantly as possible.”

James Baylis, Regional Technical Sales Engineer at Siltbuster, concludes: “It is to Costain’s credit that it consultedwith us early in the planning stages of the project.Wewere able to advise on temporary flexible modular solutionswhich could be rapidly deployed fromour hire fleet as soon as the need arose. As part of our service,we have also offered Costain specialist technical advice and training, helping to protect the aquatic ecosystems around the project.”
