SPECIAL WORKS

Clearing tarmac and concrete using a Picote Miller

C.J. Kelly International Ltd recently assisted in a challenging pipe cleaning project being undertaken by specialistDrainage contractor FastflowDrains.WorkingwithDerek Sewell of Fastflowthe project required the removal of tarmac and concrete deposits froma pipeline serving theWinchester Court residence in Vicarage Gate LondonW8, UK.

The pipeline in question comprised a cast iron drainwhich runs directly under the property in solid ground and concrete negating any potential for traditional open cut replacement of the pipeline, so a trenchless solution had to be found. The build-up of tarmac and concretematerials in the drain, whichwas highlighted by a CCTV survey, were causing damp problems in the basement flat of the property.

Assessing the problemand havingworkedwith CJ Kelly International on previous occasions, Derek sought advice on themost effective options for removing the offendingmaterials. Having heard recommendations fromother drainage contractors Derek asked about the potential use of a Picote SuperMidimillermachinewith the correct cleaning attachments.

Consultingwith CJ Kelly proved highly effectivewhen John Kelly recommended the SuperMidiwith a selection of Tiger cleaning tools.

Renting themachine to complete theworks the Fastflowteamset up the SuperMidi on 7 December 2020 at 08.30, thiswas in order to start the cleaning operations promptly at 09.00. The later startwas out of consideration to the residents. The cleaning operationwas completed by 14.30 in less than one normalworking shift and themachinewas demobilised and removed fromsite.

Fast Flowused the Picote SuperMidimachine for cutting out the tarmac and concrete fromthe cast iron drain utilising the Picote cutting headswith a Tiger bore drill head, a 100mmdiameter Tiger Drill chain, a 75mmdiameter Tiger twister concrete/liner removal tool, a leader cable, hub and grinding panels and a Flexian 3,000 psi@16 gpmhigh pressurewater jettingmachine. The operationwasmonitored using an A&MIndustrial CCTV Camera system.

The Picote SuperMidi set up for the cleaning operation.

The Picote SuperMidi removed the tarmac and concrete in just 3 passes through the pipeline, using the Tiger twister concrete removal tool. The contractor then ran themachinewith the tiger drill chain and leader cable hub and grinding panels to clean up any remaining deposits. The drainwas then finally cleaned utilising the high pressure water jetting systembefore completing a final CCTV Survey.

The pipeline before cleaning commenced holding water behind the tarmac and concrete blockage.
