NEWCASTLE HELIX


Newcastle Helix is a £350m project on a 24-acre site in the city centre being developed in a partnership between Legal & General, Newcastle University and Newcastle City Council. Newcastle Helix brings together industry leaders, businesses and top researchers in a new innovation community. It combines prestigious commercial and residential space with first class research and education facilities.


NORTH OF TYNE COMBINED AUTHORITY


The North of Tyne devolution deal includes over £600m of Government funding over 30 years to drive investment in digital skills, science and rural growth alongside the creation of a new North of Tyne Combined Authority and a directly elected North of Tyne Mayor.


TYNE & WEAR METRO


Tyne & Wear Metro are tendering a contract for new rolling stock to replace the existing fleet in 2022-2024. The 35-year contracts will include the maintenance of the trains and a new depot on the site of the existing depot at Gosforth. The Government is providing a £337m grant towards the forecast £362m cost of the rolling stock. The contract value, including maintenance, is estimated to be about £500m.


GIANTS ON THE QUAYSIDE


Newcastle’s £100m quayside development earmarked for Europe’s tallest observation wheel, dubbed ‘The Whey Aye’. Planning applications have been submitted by developers, World Wheel Company, featuring commercial, leisure and sporting provision.
