2. Launching a radical transport infrastructure plan


We have seen the publication of the One North prospectus in July 2014, the creation of Transport for the North (TfN) – a body to represent civic and business leaders from eleven local enterprise partnerships working with Highways England, Network Rail and the Department for Transport, and the publication of the Northern Transport Strategy in March 2015 with further updates in Spring 2016 and Spring 2017.


During 2018, pioneering legislation will transform TfN into the first ever statutory sub-national transport body, with legal powers and duties, overseen by the 19 different transport authorities across the north. With statutory status TfN has the mandate to make recommendations on behalf of the north to the Department for Transport, Network Rail, Highways England and HS2.


Over the next 30 years, TfN will transform road, rail, sea and air connections across the Northern Powerhouse to help drive transformational long term economic growth.


The Strategic Transport Plan drawn up by TfN explains the need for investment in transport across the north and identifies the priority areas for improved connectivity.
