NORTHERN POWERHOUSE
The Northern Powerhouse has become an established vision, shared by government, business leaders, local professionals and councils across the North.
The four ingredients of the Northern Powerhouse that were set out in 2014 were:
1. Enabling local power and control
2. Launching a radical transport infrastructure plan
3. Supporting creative thinking 4. Developing science and innovation
What is happening?
There is a growing appetite for property across the Northern Powerhouse including large residential schemes (both owner occupier and build-to-rent), speculative office development and new leisure destinations containing both independent and national bars and restaurants. Alongside this, strategic sites are being allocated for new industrial and logistics hubs, and we are witnessing more investment in transport infrastructure to support development.
1. Enabling local power and control has seen devolution, city deals and elected mayors.
Handing power back to northern cities is a key part of the government’s plans to build the Northern Powerhouse. The devolution agenda is transferring powers away from Westminster to local people, and the government is committed to seeing this process continue.
In April 2016, Greater Manchester took control of its £6bn health and social care budget. It is the first authority to do so in a clear demonstration of the extent of devolution by central government.
To date, the government has allocated £3.4bn in City Deals and Growth Deals to the Northern Powerhouse, providing targeted financial support to locally determined projects to unlock growth by giving local people the powers, tools and the money they need to drive forward growth for their areas.
Andy Burnham in Greater Manchester, Steve Rotherham in Liverpool City Region and Ben Houchen in Tees Valley were elected as Mayors in May 2017 and Dan Jarvis was elected as Mayor for Sheffield City Region in May 2018.
Devolution has paved the way for a major shift in the way the country is run. Powers, budgets and responsibilities have been passed down from central Government to new Combined Authorities and Mayors.
The Mayors will represent their City Regions across the country and internationally. They will work with Council leaders and businesses to create jobs, boost skills, build homes and improve travel.
