Petroc Prospectus | HELPING YOU CHOOSE YOUR COURSE

HELPING YOU TO CHOOSE YOUR COURSE

Petroc offers a wide range of courses to help you learn your chosen subjects in a way that suits you. Whether you want to progress onto university, move into employment or undertake an apprenticeship, we will help you on your journey to go further in life.

There is no right or wrong answer when choosing the qualifications that will sit within your study programme – it all depends on what suits you as a learner.

You can take up to three A-levels, one vocational course or an apprenticeship. Our Advice and Guidance Centre can provide advice on which style of course or subject combinations may be most suitable for you.

A-LEVELS are suitable if you enjoy academic study and are considering going on to university. A-levels provide subject opportunities that you may not have been able to study at GCSE level. They are

a Level 3 programme, take two years to complete and are assessed by end of year exams. You are also encouraged to get involved in one of our Academies to help further develop your studies.

See page 26 for our A-level courses. PROGRESSION ROUTES show the pathways open to you after completing the course.

VOCATIONAL PROGRAMMES focus on both practical and theoretical elements and are available at Levels 1, 2 or 3. You will be required to undertake a range of examinations and

assessments. You will also be expected to carry out work experience or industrial placements. See page 42 for our vocational courses.

Level 1 and 2 courses last for one year, but you can usually progress onto a higher level upon completion. Level 3 vocational courses usually run for two years and are equivalent to three A-levels. You can progress to university, apprenticeships or employment.

INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

From 2019, Petroc will be offering a series of courses as part of the planned new South West Institute of Technology (SWIoT)*.

APPRENTICESHIPS are a great way to earn while you learn by receiving a salary whilst also studying at college. An apprenticeship is a genuine job with an accompanying skills and

knowledge development programme. It gives you the perfect combination of hands-on experience whilst understanding behaviours expected at work.

For more information on apprenticeships, see page 38. Look out for this logo in the various subject areas to see if you could study as an apprentice.
