RWANDA DEVELOPMENT BOARD (AF750) Belise Kariza, chief tourism offi cer
WHAT’S RWANDA’S BIGGEST NEWS? In 2018 we became the official tourism partner of Premier League football club Arsenal FC, which will see Visit Rwanda branding on the sleeve of Arsenal shirts for the next three years. And, for the first time ever, our mountain gorilla numbers have surpassed 1,000 in the Virunga Massif region.
WHICH TOURISM MARKET IS PERFORMING BEST? Rwanda’s wildlife continues to be a strong draw and tourists are extending their visits to spot the Big Five in Akagera national park and to discover bird species in Nyungwe national park.
WHAT ARE YOU INVESTING IN FOR 2019? We are investing in premium accommodation via Wilderness Safaris’ Magashi Camp, One&Only’s Gorilla’s Nest and Singita’s Kwitonda Lodge. Our national carrier RwandAir is expanding its wings by adding more destinations such as New York and we are launching a new national park, Gishwati-Mukura.
SOMABAY (AF240) Ibrahim El Missiri, chief executive
WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN 2018? In the first nine months of 2018, Somabay experienced a 110% increase in UK visitors compared to the same period last year, cementing the fact that Somabay and Egypt are firmly on the map as tourist destinations.
WHAT DEVELOPMENTS SHOULD WE LOOK OUT
FOR IN 2019? The destination is undergoing an extensive upgrade of its food and beverage offering with a number of new outlets and restaurants already opened this year, and more to come in 2019. Of particular note are Burger and Shrimps, La Farina Pizzeria and White Beach Club.
WHAT MARKETS ARE YOU TARGETING IN 2019? The UK and Germany will be a key focus for us, alongside our local visitors. Within these markets, we’d like to welcome golf and wellness followers given the opening of the recently refurbished Cascades Golf Resort, Spa and Thalasso.
