Taking the Urban Plunge Youth on the Grow
by Jayden Leonard
Te youth group of Hebron Bible Church embarked on a mis- sion trip to Des Moines on June 22. Te group went through a ministry called Urban Plunge, which is a subdivision of Christ for the City. Tey were accompanied by a couple of Urban Plunge employees and another youth group from Illinois. “We chose to take an ‘urban plunge’ because it offered an
opportunity to see elements of ministry that we don’t oſten have access to in rural Nebraska,” Pastor Jeff Friesen said. “Basically, the urban plunge is exposure to a bunch of inner city ministries in a short period of time. Te focus is not ‘How much work we can do?’ but ‘How do we become aware of needs that are around us?’” Part of the teens’ ministry was with Joppa (
joppa.org), a ministry to the homeless in Des Moines. During their three days in Des Moines, the group served in a
variety of ministries from entertaining kids at a summer program to playing bingo with residents at a retirement home. Teens and leaders had a great time serving in the urban community. “I really enjoyed helping Joppa with their service to the home-
less. Helping the people at their camp gave me a view into their lives and how easily overlooked their struggle may be. Tey were so thankful, and they prayed with us before we continued with the rest of our mission trip,” Isaac Baysinger said.
Click-clack, back and forth
without pause, without mistake.
In the secret dark, hope grows.
Mystery takes shape, becomes flesh,
intricate incarnation rising from imagination to reality.
“It’s perfect!” He whispers softly,
chuckling with delight to see the miracle form in his hands …
Not a basket nor a blanket
but a baby Life-giving glimpse of glory
grace-shining beloved One treasure of His heart.
