A -Z All Suriname Tours PARAMARIBO, SURINAME

Suriname is a republic on the north coast of South America, with a capital city, Paramaribo, that’s divided into 10 districts. Every part of Suriname has its own unique cultural highlights to offer. The country borders French Guiana to the east, British Guiana to the west and Brazil to the south. Paramaribo was under the rule of the

Netherlands from the late 17th century until 1975 and has been UNESCO World Heritage-listed since 2002. Dutch is still the official language. Paramaribo is widely known as the Wooden City. Walk along Waterkant (waterfront) on the Suriname River, where nearby streets are lined with white, wooden Dutch colonial buildings. Suriname is one of the few countries in

the world that has a synagogue located next to a mosque. This legacy of the past has brought various ethnic groups to live together in harmony, including Amerindians (indigenous people), Hindustani, Creole, Maroon, Indonesians and Chinese. This is one of the things that makes Paramaribo unique in the world. It

has such a vast array of cultures that blend together to make such a welcoming city. About 90% of Suriname is covered in

jungle — making it the greenest country on earth. There is a tropical rainforest climate, with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The country has a wide variety of flora (primary forest) and fauna. The Surinamese interior is therefore a popular location for biologists from all over the world. A large number of species of bird, reptile and mammal inhabit these forests and the coastal strip. In Suriname you’ll also find the endangered and protected jaguar, the sloth, giant anteater, caiman (including in Bigi Pan lake and the Nickerie region), howler monkey, tapir (including at Kabalebo resort) and red ibis (especially in Bigi Pan and Nickerie).

Suriname is a truly unique destination

in which authentic cultures, untouched nature, an invaluable heritage and lively events combine to guarantee for an unforgettable trip.

HIGHLIGHT... All Suriname Tours organises trips offering adventure, culture, nature, fishing, biking and hiking across the country and neighbouring British Guiana and French Guiana
