A -Z Falkland Islands Holidays FALKLAND ISLANDS, SOUTH ATLANTIC

For travellers seeking an escape from the pressures of modern life, a visit to the Falkland Islands is the ideal tonic. With its stunning scenery, abundance of wonderful wildlife, hospitality and charm, the trip of a lifetime awaits. Opportunities for both wildlife and

landscape photography are second to none, as much of the island is still relatively untouched by human development. The clear skies create incredible atmospheric shots while the fearless wildlife will undoubtedly prove willing subjects. Similarly, due to their inquisitive nature, the shared encounters will prove unforgettable. As well as five species of penguin

(gentoo, Magellanic, rockhopper, king and the occasional macaroni), there are also over 227 species of bird, including 70% of the world’s black-browed albatross. The Falklands are also home to one of the rarest birds of prey, the striated caracara and endemic species such as the Cobb’s wren and the flightless Falkland steamer duck.

Orcas are found here, along with Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins, while larger whales such as sei and southern right whales can also be spotted offshore later in the season. Moreover, many of the beaches are home to elephant seals, sea lions and fur seals. It’s not just about wildlife — there’s

also the opportunity to dabble in some military history too; battlefield tours of key sites, memorials, museums for both the Second World War and the 1982 conflict are waiting to be discovered. There’s also an adventure to be

had on a Falklands getaway, as much of the wildlife and lodges are located in the outer islands. The main way to travel between destinations is via an eight-seater aircraft. Although many wildlife hotspots can be easily reached by foot, some (particularly on the outer islands, where there are no roads) necessitate travel in a 4x4 vehicle, across a combination of roads, tracks and uneven terrain.

HIGHLIGHT... A trip to Volunteer Point, for the world’s largest accessible colony of breeding king penguins, is an unforgettable highlight of any Falklands itinerary
