Hotel Hangaroa EASTER ISLAND, CHILE
Easter Island — or Rapa Nui as it’s known to its native Polynesian inhabitants — is one of the most isolated places on the planet. It’s called Easter Island because it was discovered on Easter Sunday of 1722 by the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen. It’s located south of the Tropic of Capricorn around 2,300 miles west of Valparaiso, Chile. The unique features of the island are the
950 (or so) moai — huge stone figures that are nearly 30ft in height and weigh around 14 tons. One of them, on Anakena beach, was restored to its original state with a plaque commemorating Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl’s visit in 1955. Other moai have since been re-erected. But Easter Island is much more than an
open-air museum. Scuba diving, snorkelling and surfing are fabulous. On land, there’s no better eco-friendly way to experience the island’s savage beauty than on foot, from a bike saddle or on horseback. Hotel Hangaroa is located in a prime
location on Easter Island, on the main promenade of the town of Rapa Nui, close
to the centre, which allows travellers easy access to the local community, and the chance to learn more about their customs and culture. Finding out about the magical culture of
Rapa Nui is a fundamental part of the experience the hotel wants to deliver. Taking excursions with expert guides who are well-versed in the ancestral culture of the island, visitors can be immersed in the mysticism of the setting. The hotel is unique in its environment,
its designs, materials and history, giving it a magical appeal. The architecture blends in with the environment thanks to its grass roofs, colours and textures. It pays tribute to the Orongo ceremonial village, near the volcano Ranu Kau, an iconic place of Rapa Nui culture. Hotel Hangaroa offers three different
packages: the full experience, which is an all-inclusive programme; Discover, which is half-board; and Dream, where guests stay on a bed and breakfast basis.
HIGHLIGHT... Easter Island will be the best location to watch both the forthcoming total lunar eclipse (21 January 2019) and a total eclipse of the sun (2 July 2019)
