The winners of the 2018 LATA achievement awards were revealed at the Experience Latin America (ELA) conference.
This was the eighth edition of the awards, which recognise individuals and/or companies that have made an exceptional contribution to the development of travel to Latin America. Australis was named Cruise Operator of the
Year, for providing tours to some of the most remote regions of the world, with outstanding customer satisfaction rates. Belmond was the winner of the Product Launch of the Year award, for the Belmond Andean Explorer. Airline of the Year was Air Europa, for its continent-wide support and the introduction of 22 new Dreamliner aircraft. Audley Travel took the People Award,
while Hotel of the Year was awarded to EcoCamp Patagonia, one of the few operations permitted in the Torres del Paine National Park. Amazon Nature Tours took the Sustainability Award, and Marketing
Campaign of the Year was awarded to Cox & Kings for its 2017 co-marketing campaign with PromPeru that highlighted Peru’s central tourism attractions. Peak DMC won the DMC/ Local Tour Operator of the Year Award for demonstrating its commitment to high- quality and safe tours by ensuring all staff receive real-life scenario training with paramedic instructors. Finally, the Tour Operators of the Year award went to Latin Routes. “The LATA Media Awards have grown
year-on-year to become one of LATA’s most important flagship events,” said LATA chairman Colin Stewart. “The winners are selected by a top-tier judging panel composed of key figures from the Latin American travel industry. Eco corridor A new tourist route has opened in Argentina’s Littoral region. The Ecotourism Corridor comprises four major areas — Iguazú, Ibera, Impenetrable and Bañado La Estrella, and features hiking
routes, horse riding paths, and schemes to help visitors learn
more about native people and their culture.

Blue Flag beaches The Costa Rica Tourism Board awarded Blue Flag status to 107 beaches for 2018. Meanwhile, the international Blue Flag programme, administered by the Foundation for Environmental Education, awarded Blue Flag status to five beaches in Brazil, 29 in the Dominican Republic and 53 in Mexico.

New ancient Mexico A new archaeological site, Ichkabal Mayan, will open at the end of 2018 in the southern Mexican region of Quintana Roo. The site is spread over more than 11.5sq miles and is believed to have been one of the most important political centres in the region during the Preclassic Mayan era. The site is expected to increase visitor numbers to the region.
