L ATIN AMERICA At a glance... LATIN AMERICA: HOW TO DEFINE IT?
roadly, it’s a group of countries where Spanish, French and Portuguese are spoken. It covers an extraordinary area of the planet — stretching from the northern border of
Mexico to the southern tip of South America. Tourism is already well established in many of these countries: Mexico received 35.1 million international tourists in 2016 — 521,000 of those were British, making it the
largest market in Europe for the country. Brazil saw 6.6 million visitors, the Dominican Republic six million. Other destinations may have fewer visitors but new flight routes are opening up the region in a big way. Latin America offers an incredible range of experiences for visitors: relaxing on idyllic beaches, exploring the remains of ancient civilisations, seeing astonishing wildlife — there’s so much to discover.
