Falkland Islands Tourist Board FALKLAND ISLANDS
The Falkland Islands is a remarkable destination, rich in history, natural beauty, wildlife, and culture. It’s an archipelago consisting of two main islands (East and West Falkland) and more than 740 smaller islands. Minimal development and infrastructure means that visitors can experience the abundant wildlife that draws specialists from all over the globe. With more than 750,000 penguins across five breeding species, the Falklands is the ultimate place to see these fascinating birds. The islands are also home to vast colonies of sea birds, including the world’s largest population of black-browed albatross. Stretched along the sheltered harbour,
the colourful buildings of Stanley bid a warm welcome to visitors. This capital city is village-sized but has the amenities you’d expect of a large town and there’s plenty to discover. Different architectural styles abound in Stanley, along with features of the island’s British heritage. There are interesting buildings to explore and some surprising photographic opportunities.
Imagine a place that’s so far off the
beaten track you have miles of stunning landscape, beaches and magnificent birdlife all to yourself. Imagine a silence that’s only broken by the call of the birds, and your own footsteps as you explore these beautiful islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. It’s easy to visit the Falkland Islands — there are flights available from England and South America, and many cruises stop off here. Once you’re here, the islands offer a wealth of opportunities and experiences: there’s wildlife watching, photography, walking and hiking, fishing, arts and crafts, as well as visiting historical or heritage sites. The Falkland Islands is one of the last
great wilderness destinations where your trip becomes an adventure. Four-wheel- drive vehicles are the main mode of transport, and small planes shuttle you to islands abundant with penguins, albatrosses and petrels, all there for you to discover and enjoy.
HIGHLIGHT... Wildlife encounters are amazing, including such sights as the sparring of male elephant seals and the majestic black-browed albatross in flight
