WELCOME Staying strong Trying times show our true mettle It seems like aeons ago that we clinked our glasses on New Year’s Eve and voiced our


earnest, bleary-eyed hopes that 2017 would be, if not better, then just less grueling than 2016. We’re not quite at the end yet, but it’s safe to say that this year hasn’t been the reprieve we hoped for. T e fi rst year of the Trump administration has been... eventful. From the on-going


global anxiety around North Korea, to the direct, disruptive infl uences on the travel industry with the travel ban and Cuban regulations, it certainly hasn’t been a boring time for agents. And then, of course, there were the devastating eff ects of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, as well as the earthquake in Mexico. T ese natural disasters wreaked devastation and tested the resolve of those caught in their snares. Yet, even during these darkest of times, there was inspiration to be found. Rescue


services and ordinary people went beyond the call of duty to save the lives of their fellow citizens, embodying the meaning of heroism. In the wake of Harvey, ASTA pledged its support to the Hurricane Harvey Tourism Recovery Fund, launched by Tourism Cares and the Texas Travel Industry Association to aid the recovery of hard- hit, vulnerable communities. At the same time, ASTA continues to advocate for agents in debates around key


issues, including the Travel Agent Retail Fairness Act. Amid these bracing challenges are reasons to be optimistic and excited. T is year’s


ASTA Global Convention in San Diego brought together colleagues from around the world for one of the most successful conventions in recent memory. T ere was a sense of determination in the air, a resolution to surmount the testing times ahead and celebrate the agents who make up our industry. Next up is the ASTA China Summit, a four-day event taking place November 8-12. If
