Update HOTELS

Cuba goes five-star

Cuba’s tourism renaissance has lead to a

spike in notable hotel launches, the latest of which is Te Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana which opened on 7 June in Old Havana. Te hotel has 246 rooms, six restaurants and bars, and a spa facility — and marks the brand's re-entry into the Americas. While visitors to the island have been

increasing year-on-year — with a record four million visitors last year, a 13% increase from the previous year, Kempinski says this is the first true luxury five-star property in Cuba. “We believe the market is ready for a true luxury hotel,” said Xavier Destribats, chief operating officer for the Americas and general manager of the hotel. Kempinski is not the only brand launching

luxury hotels on the island: Starwood is due to launch a Luxury Collection overhaul of the state-owned Gran Caribe Hotel Inglaterra in 2019, following the opening of Four Points by Sheraton Havana in June, the first U.S. hotel to open in Cuba in nearly 60 years. However, Marriott has said it may change

its future plans for hotels in Cuba in the light of President Trump’s decision to roll back Obama administration policies. Tese allowed private U.S. businesses to make financial transactions with the Cuban military — which controls a share of the country’s tourism and hotel sector. Despite this, Accor and Iberostar also have luxury hotels planned. kempinski.com
