Transform your inhaler T

affected by lung diseases

his year, NHS England reported that more than 12 million people in the UK are currently such as

asthma, and over 60 million inhalers are prescribed every year as a key form of treatment. However, recent research by Nottingham University shows abuse on online platforms is fuelling ‘a vicious cycle’ that stigma- tises asthma and encourages those with the condition to distance them- selves from it, making many less likely to adhere to their medication and more vulnerable to asthma attacks. A business based in York called Te

Inhaler Tailor has made it its mission to change this. Its solution is a range of cases that create positive asso- ciations with medical

inhalers by

making them a statement of the user’s personality, not their medical condi- tion. Te inhaler cases slide over the inhaler, similar to a mobile phone case, and help convert the device from something many avoid using in public to something that makes them smile each time they use it. Te inhaler cases, developed with

guidance from the UK Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory agency and reviewed by Asthma + Lung UK, come in over 40 designs, ranging from unicorns to dinosaurs to Van Gogh’s Starry Night (which Te Inhaler Tailor has named Van Cough). Founder William Hogge says

“Inhalers are invaluable from a medical perspective but those of us who have to carry one rarely enjoy using it. As a child, I saw it as a scary medical device and as I got older peer pressure made me feel embarrassed. Films and TV shows often portray people that need inhalers as somehow weak or nerdy, which is frustrating as it embeds a stigma in people’s minds. When my daughter’s best friend was diagnosed with asthma at the age of four and I saw her parents struggle to get her to use it, I wanted to help — so I started Te Inhaler Tailor.” As well as the design advantage, the

cases bring other benefits to inhaler users. Many will relate to getting a lungful of dust and lint when using an inhaler that’s been in a pocket or bag for some time. Te Inhaler Tailor’s cases include a mouthpiece cap holder that prevents mouthpiece caps getting lost or coming off accidentally, thereby reducing debris getting into the inhaler.

In addition, all its cases

have an eyelet so they can be attached to keyrings & lanyards to keep the inhaler safe, quicker to access and easier to find. Te cases are all handmade in

York using a state-of-the-art plant- based material that’s 100% animal free; they also come in a sandblasted aluminium presentation case. If you have an inhaler or know someone that does, check them out and bring a smile to 2024.
